Mark 12:43-44 “…I tell you the truth, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything–all she had to live on.” (NIV)*
The world would not be impressed and might even scoff at her offering. But Jesus knew those two small copper coins were all she had.
Her contribution would not be noticeable mixed with the collection of coins from the rich. Yet, Jesus saw. Her faithfulness didn’t escape His gaze.
Jesus knows the state of the heart. What looks good to man, may be but a show. Some may follow the exact letter of the law with hearts far removed. Their offering could have cost them nothing. Easy come easy go.
Sometimes, it seems that life should look better, different. When all has been sacrificed and obedience offered, the outcome can still look small, even poverty-stricken. Unfulfilled expectations leave a hopeless feeling.
It’s about more than money. It could be pouring every ounce of energy into a relationship that keeps sliding downhill, or health that won’t be restored despite doing all the right things. Maybe a company downsizes after your best year yet, and you find yourself jobless. The best efforts don’t always equal best looking outcomes…in the eyes of the world.
But Jesus sits there watching every copper coin offered. He knows what you gave and the price you paid. Be encouraged. Be at rest.
He knows when you’ve held nothing back. He sees when you’ve given everything and the heart behind it.
The widow left with the commendation of Jesus. If we’ve pleased Him, what richer blessing could there be?
Lord, you know when I’ve given it my all. Thank you for seeing my heart! Amen.
