Better than a fairy tale

John 1:1-2 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning.” John 1:14 “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us…” (NIV)*

Cinderella doesn’t get any better than this.

It’s the purest, noblest, most heart-felt story of all…the greatest love story ever told. He came and died for his beloved bride, that he might be with her forever.

This is no fairy tale…it’s better. The King came because he loved the world. Sounds like a happily ever after ending…bride and groom united forever in perfect love. Sigh.

There was a glitch…we didn’t recognize him. The bride rejected His love. That’s the screech across the chalkboard story. After living in the flesh and enduring death by crucifixion…He wasn’t accepted. Ouch.

And His heart broke. For those unwilling to be reconciled to God through Him. Those missing the happy ending.

But, for those who do receive him, and believe in his name…welcome, to the forever after family of God.

John 1:10 “He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him.” John 1:12 “Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.” (NIV)*

Open my eyes

Luke 24:31 & 45 “Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him…Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures.” (NIV)*

Lord, open my eyes to see

Moments of opportunity

Not missing your presence near

To meet a need, wipe a tear.

………………..

Lord, open my mind to know

The words you want to sow

Not missing insights from you

Words of hope, words of truth.

In today’s reading of The One Year Bible, eyes were opened to recognize Jesus and minds opened to understand the Scriptures. Praying for eyes and mind to be opened…not missing anything He wants to reveal!

The Daffodils Sing

Psalm 98:4 “Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth, burst into jubilant song with music.” (NIV)*

Bend close your listening ear

Daffodils sing, do you hear?

Jubilant adoration they bring

With faces lifted to their King.

………………..

Blooms shout loud today

Songs of joy, words of praise.

Here with us but for a moment

Proclaiming divine atonement.

………………..

All year patiently waiting there

Bulbs of hope without a care.

Now their chance to rise and show

The Savior, they must surely know.

Come with Me

Psalm 95:3-5 “For the Lord is the great God, the great king above all gods. In his hand are the depths of the earth, and the mountain peaks belong to him. The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land.” (NIV)*

Come with Me to the mountain peaks

We’ll watch the eagles soar.

Come ride the waves of a dolphin parade

As the oceans surge and roar.

………………..

Come with Me to a rainforest laden

We’ll find creatures rarely seen.

Come find drink in a desert place

Hidden in prickly canteens.

………………..

Come with Me to the mountain peaks

High above tree tops tall.

There’s perspective there you need to see

The Lord God is over all.

Sometimes, it helps to remember He is Creator. Ultimately, He is in control. All creation is the art of his fingertips. The earth’s interior, the highest mountains, the seas and lands…it all belongs to Him. Sigh.

Go in peace and enjoy what his hands have created.

Sifted thoughts

Psalm 94:11 “The Lord knows the thoughts of man; he knows that they are futile.” (NIV)*

God has provided a sifter for our futile thinking…His Word. It’s a grid for unfiltered thoughts to be poured through. Clumps of lies and worthless ideas can be sorted out and thrown away. The result? A bowl full of sifted thoughts.

Thoughts of mine

Skew off path

Futile ambitions

Are selfish driven.

………………..

When sifted through

His blessed word

Chaff is tossed

Worthless ways lost.

………………..

Thoughts of Him

Can be trusted true

His purposes fed

When Spirit led.

Do tell

Judges 2:10 “…another generation grew up, who knew neither the Lord nor what he had done for Israel.” (NIV)*

Oh…do tell.

Sing the songs

Hum the lullabies

Hymns of God’s great love

Read the stories always

Speak the words out loud

That future generations know

The faithfulness of God.

………………..

Proverbs 14:1 “The wise woman builds her house…” (NIV)*

………………..

Oh…be wise.

Lay foundations strong

Raise walls of truth

Paint with grace

Store wisdom deep

Open windows of hope

May Christ ever be

the cornerstone.

I love the way Judges 2:10 went hand-in-hand with Proverbs 14:1 in today’s reading of The One Year Bible.

Settled and Stayed

Psalm 91:1 “He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.” (NIV)*

Suitcase

Suitcase (Photo credit: audioeric)

A girl in a tattered coat and hat sat her suitcase down timidly. Shafts of light caught her eye and drew her gaze upward, through the windows of a vaulted ceiling. She let the brilliance soak in, warming her to the very core.

A lady’s greeting interrupted her thoughts. The lady took her coat, her hat, and pulled the heavy suitcase to the side. “You won’t be needing these anymore.”

The girl wasn’t sure she wanted to give up her stuff. All she wanted was to find shelter.

“Am I going to be staying here? I thought this was just a visit,” said the girl, nerves twisting inside. “Will I ever go back?”

“That’s up to you, honey,” replied the lady. “This is the shelter of God. Stay here and you’ll know rest.” Then the hostess leaned toward her with arms spread wide and whispered loud, “The whole shelter is covered with his shadow.”

The girl thought about her old house with its leaky roof and sagging porch. Though in dire need of repair, it was home. She missed it and wanted to return to the familiar. She wasn’t sure she could handle all this rest.

The hostess just smiled with twinkling eyes. She knew that once the girl stayed in the shelter of the Most High, she’d come to prefer it over any other place. She would grow to love the peace and enjoy the rest.

And though the hostess knew the girl would indeed leave the shelter from time to time, she knew she would always come back. The love of God is like that…always drawing back to his shelter. It’s the only place that truly satisfies the soul.

My soul finds rest

in the shelter of the Most High

Peace awaits those who stay

Rest is given those who abide

Settled and stayed

In the shadow that satisfies.
